WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) announced the creation of an Education Advisory Council, a group of experienced educators and community leaders who will serve as her trusted advisors on education issues impacting Michigan’s 10th Congressional District. The council will focus on all aspects of education, including post-secondary education and alternatives to a traditional four-year degree.
“Our children are our country’s future, and I’m committed to ensuring they are successful in and out of the classroom,” said Rep. McClain. “By forming this advisory council, I will be able to have eyes and ears on the ground to keep me up-to-date on important education developments and needs in the district.”
The Education Advisory Council includes: Romeo High School Academy Coach Rich Boggio, Southeast Michigan Construction Academy Director of Education DeAnna Morley, St. Clair County Economic Development Alliance CEO Dan Casey, Macomb County Planning and Economic Development Director Vicky Rowinski, Macomb Community College President Jim Sawyer, St. Clair County Regional Educational Service Academy Superintendent Kevin Miller, Dakota High School Career and Technical Education Teacher Adam Carr and State Representative Gary Howell.
The advisory council will primarily focus on alternatives to post-secondary education including skilled labor and trades.
“Manufacturing companies are among the largest employers in Michigan’s 10th Congressional District, and our manufacturers are struggling to find skilled labor to fill open positions due to a skills gap and lack of information on trade and apprenticeship programs,” said Rep. McClain. “I look forward to working with my Education Advisory Council on finding ways to bolster our apprenticeship and trade programs in the district and provide resources to students on the benefits of these programs.”
Rep. McClain advocates for career and technical opportunities for students. She recently introduced the bipartisan Youth Workforce Readiness Act of 2021, which would support after school programs that build knowledge, skills and enable learning experiences that help children prepare for the 21st century workforce.
In Congress, Rep. McClain serves on the House Education and Labor Committee.
