WASHINGTON—Today, House Republican Conference Chairwoman Lisa McClain (R-Mich.) released the following statement after the U.S. House of Representatives unanimously passed her Taiwan Conflict Deterrence Act.

Chairwoman McClain introduced the bipartisan legislation to impose severe economic consequences on the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) should it initiate a military invasion of Taiwan.

“Congress took a major step to protect peace, defend democracy, and deter aggression against our ally Taiwan,” Chairwoman McClain said. “The Taiwan Conflict Deterrence Act makes it crystal clear to the CCP: invading Taiwan will come with steep and immediate costs. I was proud to introduce this legislation that puts teeth behind our commitment to peace through strength in the Indo-Pacific.”

In March, the House Financial Services Committee passed the legislation unanimously 48-0.

The legislation was Chairwoman McClain’s first bill introduced this Congress.
