WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, during a House Education and Labor Committee titled, “Examining the Policies and Priorities of the U.S. Department of Labor,” Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) questioned Labor Secretary Marty Walsh on the economic recovery, unemployment issues and urged him to commit to ending federal enhanced unemployment benefits immediately.
During Rep. McClain’s questioning, Secretary Walsh agreed with McClain on the economic issues at hand, but refused to commit to ending the unnecessary enhanced unemployment benefits.
“Am I hearing you correctly that you will commit to ending these unnecessary benefits as soon as possible, hopefully in September,” asked McClain.
“No, I won’t commit to ending them as soon as possible, but they expire in September, so for all intents and purposes in September they expire, so at that point you could say they end,” said Sec. Walsh.
