WASHINGTON – Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson’s office announced that 15 noncitizens illegally cast a ballot in the 2024 election. Rep. Lisa McClain (MI-9), alongside her fellow Republicans from Michigan’s Congressional delegation, is asking for answers on how this happened and what steps will be taken to prevent similar instances in the future.
“I expect full cooperation from the Michigan Secretary of State’s office. Significant operational changes need to be made to protect the integrity of our elections, and legislation like the SAVE Act needs to be signed into law,” McClain said. “Plain and simple: only U.S. citizens should vote in U.S. elections.”
Rep. John Moolenaar (MI-2) led the letter, which was signed by Reps. McClain, Jack Bergman (MI-1), Bill Huizenga (MI-4), Tim Walberg (MI-5), Tom Barrett (MI-7), and John James (MI-10).

Background:
Last October, McClain sent a letter to Benson calling for answers after the Detroit News reported a Chinese national attending the University of Michigan voted illegally in the 2024 election.
At a Congressional hearing last September, Benson claimed, "There is no evidence that non-citizens are voting."
The Secretary is publicly opposed to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which would prevent noncitizens from voting by requiring individuals to provide documents proving they are a United States citizen, such as a REAL ID, to register to vote.
