The winning piece, “Meemaw’s Mirror,” was created by Lillia Weiss, a 12th grader at Lake Orion High School. A panel of local artists and art educators selected it. Her work will be displayed in the U.S. Capitol for a year alongside other winning entries from congressional districts nationwide.
This year, the competition saw the highest number of submissions in district history, with over 450 submissions from 26 schools. Students submitted various pieces ranging from painting and photography to mixed media and digital design.
The Congressional Art Competition is a nationwide visual arts contest for high school students, held annually to recognize and encourage artistic talent in each congressional district.
Tonight, Chairwoman McClain held a local awards ceremony at St. Clair County Community College to honor all participants and celebrate the contributions of young artists in the district.
