WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) re-introduced the Safe RESEARCH Act, which would prohibit the sale of fetal tissue from an abortion.
“Harvesting and selling fetal tissue from abortions is a disgusting practice that must be stopped,” said Rep. McClain. “The Safe RESEARCH Act will ensure that scientists can continue important research while protecting innocent unborn babies.”
The Safe Responsible, Ethical Scientific Endeavors Assuring Research for Compassionate Healthcare (RESEARCH) Act would amend Section 498A of the Public Health Act to include fetal tissue may be used for research purposes, but only if it is obtained as the result of a stillbirth or ectopic pregnancy, not from an abortion.
Due to advancements in medical technology, such as adult stem cell science, fetal tissue is an unnecessary option for medical researchers.
Rep. McClain first introduced this legislation in January 2021 during the 117th Congress.
