WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) announced 10 additional cosponsors to her bipartisan legislation that would posthumously award the Congressional Gold Medal to the 13 U.S. military servicemembers who were killed in Afghanistan on August 26, 2021. McClain introduced this legislation last week, which now has 241 cosponsors.

Reps. Steve Scalise (R-LA), Debbie Dingell (D-MI), Jake Ellzey (R-TX), David Scott (D-GA), Darin LaHood (R-IL), Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC), Nikema Williams (D-GA), Ann McLane Kuster (D-NH), Brian Babin (R-TX) and Dwight Evans (D-PA) signed on as cosponsors today.

“I’m encouraged that this legislation to honor the 13 servicemembers killed in Afghanistan last week is receiving overwhelming support from both sides of the aisle,” said Rep. McClain. “I urge House leadership to quickly pass this bill so we can honor the lives of our fallen servicemembers.”

"The 13 service members who were killed in the recent Kabul terrorist attacks are American heroes. They made the ultimate sacrifice protecting innocent men, women, and children in Afghanistan. I am proud to support Congresswoman McClain's legislation, which awards the Congressional Gold Medal to each fallen service member. I would like to offer my deepest sympathies and prayers to the military families who lost a husband, a wife, a son, or a daughter. We are praying for the Americans still stranded behind enemy lines, as well as the Afghan people," said House Republican Whip Steve Scalise.

“Our troops gave everything to protect us,” said Rep. Dingell. “This bipartisan bill shows that, regardless of political party, we must honor every single fallen servicemember and support their families however we can. These gold medals won’t bring back their loved ones, but they will represent the courage, strength, and sacrifice the 13 brave servicemembers gave on behalf of their country.”

“The 13 brave men and women in uniform who were killed in the terror attack in Afghanistan were heroes,” said Rep. Kuster. “I am proud to join with my colleagues from across the aisle to honor the ultimate sacrifice these servicemembers and their families made for our country, and to commemorate their incredible courage with the highest honor we can.”

“The 13 fallen servicemembers are heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice protecting America,” said Congresswoman Williams. “I am proud to co-sponsor this bipartisan bill in their honor, and I will continue to send my thoughts and prayers to their families as they heal from this heartbreaking loss.”
