WASHINGTON, D.C.- Today, Congresswoman Lisa McClain (R-MI) introduced a resolution seeking the censure of Rep. Jamaal Bowman (D-NY) for his role in pulling a fire alarm in Cannon House Office Building while the United States House of Representatives was considering legislation. Section 22-1319 of the District of Columbia Criminal Code makes knowingly causing a false alarm of fire a misdemeanor punishment.

“While the House was working tirelessly to avert a government shutdown, Representative Bowman was working nefariously to prevent a vote,” said Rep. Lisa McClain. “It is reprehensible that a Member of Congress would go to such lengths to prevent House Republicans from bringing forth a vote to keep the government operating and Americans receiving their paychecks. Especially from a former schoolteacher, who without a doubt understands the function and severity of pulling a fire alarm.”

Instead of being able to enter the chamber and hold an appropriate debate on critical legislation, House Members and their staff were forced to evacuate the Cannon House Office Building, delaying a vote as a shutdown loomed. Rep. Bowman went out of his way to obstruct the work of Congress and broke the laws of D.C. in the process, and for that, he deserves to be Censured before the House.
